It is essential that we acknowledge the history of the land and its original stewards from whom the land was stolen. Additionally, we want to provide resources for further learning and to center present-day Native communities. The following statement is adapted from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ias.umn.edu\/about\/ias-land-acknowledgement\">University of Minnesota&#8217;s Institute for Advanced Studies.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"page-title\">The University resides on Dakota land ceded in the Treaties of 1837 and 1851.\u00a0 We acknowledge this place has a complex and layered history. This land acknowledgment is one of the ways in which we work to educate the campus and community about this land and our relationships with it and each other. We encourage you to learn more:<\/p>\n<div id=\"block-ias-provost-ias-system-main\" class=\"block block-system block-system-main-block\" data-block-plugin-id=\"system_main_block\">\n<article id=\"node-1551\" class=\"\" role=\"article\">\n<div class=\"layout layout--onecol\">\n<div class=\"layout__region layout__region--content\">\n<div class=\"block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodeaap-general-pagefield-app-gen-body-info\" data-block-plugin-id=\"field_block:node:aap_general_page:field_app_gen_body_info\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-app-gen-body-info field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/truthproject\/about\">The TRUTH project<\/a> &#8212; &#8220;<span class=\"C9DxTc \">A collaboration between the 11 recognized Tribal Governments of Minnesota, the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council (MIAC), and the Office of American Indian and Tribal Nations Relations at the University of Minnesota (UMN)<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">T<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">owards\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">R<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">ecognition and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">U<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">niversity-<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">T<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">ribal\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">H<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">ealing\u2014<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">TRUTH<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">\u2014project is a Native-organized, Native-led, community-driven research movement that offers multiple recommendations on how the University community can be in better relation with Indigenous peoples.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Marlena Myles Maps\" href=\"https:\/\/marlenamyl.es\/project\/dakota-land-map\/?fbclid=IwAR2RWA7ylTEYniQVfSPwhDTdy4zwKbyAi-AVx-poHQo-hp8Aytf1AKt7hLc%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Local Dakota Land Map<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 downloadable visual and audio Dakota land maps of Minneapolis, St. Paul, and surrounding areas by local artist Marlena Myles<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Why Treaties Matter\" href=\"http:\/\/treatiesmatter.org\/exhibit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Treaties Matter<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a comprehensive and thoughtful exploration of treaties and land theft in Minnesota.
