I am also earning a graduate certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies, and I have been teaching WGST courses at UNC for about four years. Generally speaking, my research and teaching revolve around RHM—especially mental health rhetoric—WGST, and life writing. My dissertation unites those interests, grounding its case studies in popular memoirs by women with mental illness. I study how these texts both reflect and reinforce what I call “Mad Genius” rhetoric, or a set of cultural discourses that posit a link between mental illness and extraordinary creativity, intelligence, or other gifts. Each of my chapters investigates one of four distinct Mad Genius topoi: 1) genius leads to madness, 2) madness confers genius, 3) madness and genius are both innate and indistinguishable, 4) madness and genius share a common source in external trauma. The conclusion of this project delves into the concept of “bibliotherapy,” analyzing what is at stake (for whom) in the widespread circulation of Mad Genius rhetoric through popular media. As I finish this project in the 2020-2021 academic year, I am also teaching first-year composition, health/medical writing, and a “COVID Investigations” course for UNC’s Carolina Away program titled “Gender, Health, and Civic Engagement Under Lockdowns.” Outside my doctoral research, my scholarly projects are increasingly drawing on my work as a volunteer support group facilitator at a women’s center close to UNC—since 2016, I have designed and led ~130 hours of writing/art/discussion-based groups for survivors of domestic violence. For my contributions to the Chapel Hill community, I was most recently recognized as a Maynard Adams Fellow for the Public Humanities (Carolina Public Humanities) and the Senior Fellow in the Humanities Professional Pathway program (UNC Humanities for the Public Good).

Nora Augustine Ph.D. Candidate and Teaching Fellow University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Description of Work: I am a Ph.D. candidate in English and Comparative Literature at UNC Chapel … Continue reading Nora Augustine →

["post-369","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
