My interests, broadly construed, are feminist rhetorical practice, reproductive justice, chronic disease, and rhetorical studies of archives (digital or analog). At the RHM Symposium, I am workshopping my MA thesis. In this piece, I use secondary and archival sources to investigate an alternative treatment method for polio care, clashes between the medical establishment and an outspoken alternative practitioner, and tensions over where expertise lies. I use a feminist approach to the archives and to doctor-patient relationships in order to understand why an alternative treatment to polio was so popular from the 1930s through the 1950s. In my analysis, I mobilize ethos to investigate how and why the alternative polio treatment was controversial and to understand the rhetorical strategies practitioners used to make their treatment method rhetorically powerful and viable for patients. Ultimately, I build a theory of a collaborative ethos of care. Looking forward, I am interested in extending my work into questions of chronic disease, the ethics of archival collections, and critical disability studies.

Jacqueline James University of Minnesota Description of Work: I recently completed my masters degree at the University of Minnesota and am now a first year PhD student in the same … Continue reading Jacqueline James →

["post-329","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
