In my collaborations with Ellen Barton I have brought my theoretical interest in the notion of vulnerability to specific discourse situations in medical research, most recently recruitment interviews for Phase 1 clinical trials. We are extending this line of critical inquiry to analyze the rhetoric of vulnerable populations in the history and development of Institutional Review Boards.
