Description of Work:

My current research focuses on eating disorder (ED) prevention and intervention within collegiate athletics. Specifically, it explores combining framework from sports medicine, rhetoric, and new literacy studies (NLS) to generate new methodological approaches to access coaches’ ED knowledge and experiences. Rather than conventional means of assessment, my interest is to explore aspects that may influence ED knowledge yet remain understudied in the context of sports medicine: ED literacy experience, sponsorship, and athletic embodiment. In short, I want to better understand what and how individuals have come to know what they know about EDs. The hope is to then expand and/or improve upon education and training protocols that result in increased prevention and intervention. The working title of my research is, “Eating Disorder Assessment in Collegiate Athletics: Let’s Try a New (Literacy) Way.”

As a second-year graduate student, this work in progress will contribute to final research done within UCF’s master’s program. Through this research, I hope to continue to explore the possibilities of bridging the fields of the sciences and humanities together. It is also my hope to contribute to the efforts that better serve those who suffer from EDs.
