Description of Work:
When we set out to write this paper, we decided that we wanted to theorize the rhetoric of the novel’s AA meetings, not as a way of interpreting Wallace’s novel, but rather as a possibility for a non-persuasive form of communication. To that end, we began to think of those moments in the novel within the context of Sonja Foss and Cindy Griffin’s “Invitational Rhetoric.”
While we have been researching the rhetoric of addiction, readings of Wallace’s portrayal of addiction, and invitational rhetoric, we decided to focus our first draft on trying to align what we found in the novel with Foss and Griffin’s work.
