Description of your work
I come to the rhetoric of health and medicine from my more general work on vulnerability. In my collaborations with Ellen Barton I have brought my theoretical interest in the notion of vulnerability to specific discourse situations in medical research, most recently recruitment interviews for Phase 1 clinical trials. We are extending this line of critical inquiry to analyze the rhetoric of vulnerable populations in the history and development of Institutional Review Boards. I am also beginning work with community groups in Flint and health care providers in Detroit to use narrative to address health disparities.
