Description of your work

I am a PhD student of Technical Communication and Rhetoric at Texas Tech University, studying under the direction of Kendall Gerdes. My dissertation will focus on the intersection of fat activism and self-care through the Greek concept of parrhesia or frank speech. I am interested in learning how activists balance their responsibility to themselves and the communities they serve when activism and care are viewed as the effects of distributed agency, rather than individually-directed responses. My other interests include the rhetoric of diets and foodways rhetoric.

I also teach Communication at Galveston College, where in addition to teaching I am wrapping-up serving as the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Director. In this capacity I led a team that worked to provide faculty professional development for the purpose of enhancing student academic reading in gateway courses.
