Description of your work
My work has focused on the rhetorical construction of agency in patient/provider interactions in a variety of settings, including the emergency department, the ICU, and chronic illness. I am also interested in health literacy and its role in developing and supporting patient and caregiver agency, especially in chronic illness. Having lost my niece and two friends to cystic fibrosis, I have been especially interested in that illness community. However, over the last couple of years, I have developed an interest in sickle cell disease and, in addition to the project for this conference, I am working on a health literacy project concerning gene therapy and bone marrow transplant for sickle cell.
