Description of Work:
I’m currently working on a book about the rhetoric of diabetes management. The work attempts to move past conceptions of management that are generally formulated using the clinic as a site of investigation, looking to the myriad ways diabetes materializes in the public sphere. Diabetes is imagined, often in contradictory terms, as: erratic, easily controlled, a disease to be transcended, an epidemic, a neo-liberal marker of individual responsibility, and the new frontier of technological possibility, among others. I argue these differing conceptions of diabetes influence how we approach, investigate, and ultimately treat the disease.
